Help MADRE empower women and reduce disease by installing the appropriate equipment to ensure a regular source of clean water for area schools and villages. Your gift also includes training on health, hygiene, and the maintenance of community water systems.
Why we picked this campaign?
1. This project helps provide uncontaminated water source that prevents illenes and ensure proper hygeine.
2. Water systems are managed and maintained by local women and youth who receive proper training.
3. This project gives women more free time to do other activities since they no longer need to travel long distances to fetch clean water.
Why is this project needed?
In indigenous communities in Kenya, women face a host of human rights issues, including: forced marriage, forced genital mutilation, domestic abuse, poverty, unsanitary living conditions, and discrimination toward Indigenous Peoples. In addition to these challenges, many women face the arduous task of collecting water for their families. Many women walk several miles each morning to collect water for household use, going early to watering holes to avoid livestock that contaminate water sources. Contact with and consumption of contaminated water has led to the spread of diseases such as cholera, scabies, and typhoid.
In several communities in Kenya, MADRE is working in collaboration with the Indigenous Information Network to install community water collection points or water collection tanks to help provide clean water to the community and schools.
MADRE is an international women's human rights organization that works in partnership with community-based women's organizations worldwide to address issues of economic and environmental justice, women’s health and violence against women, and peace building. MADRE provides resources, training, and support to enable our sister organizations to meet concrete needs in their communities and develop long-term solutions to the crises they face. MADRE addresses the negative impacts of US actions abroad and empowers people in the US to challenge and change destructive government policies.
